After nearly 20 years of living on the East Coast, I relocated to California in 2015 – land of Brett Weston and William Garnett and so many of my biggest creative influences. Oddly perhaps, this move helped me realize that the process of making fine prints which had occupied so much of my time and energy up to that point was actually interfering with the reasons I began making photographs in the first place. The simple act of seeing had somehow been compromised by the craft of printmaking. Instead, I craved simplicity of process and the compulsion to make new work that dominated my early photography. These photographs were made from 2015-19 in such far flung locations as California and Egypt. Rocks and Roots is a return of sorts to my creative roots – a celebration of the natural forms which have captured my imagination for over 30 years.
